Being an agent for Change
Arunodaya, Mentor, Project Puthri

As a trainer working amongst youngsters over the years in many assignments I have had wonderful experiences but the one with Project Puthri has been the most inspiring and notable one that I would cherish forever.

Ms. Arunodaya
One fine afternoon, I started my routine journey to one of the schools for a workshop session for the higher secondary classes. It was the second visit to the School for a session for the Puthris. As a routine procedure I met with the school head to bring the students for the session. It took almost 30 minutes for me to get settled for the session since I had to persuade hard with the school head. Also the challenge, on the other hand, was to motivate the Puthri scholars in order to understand the importance of the programme and to assemble them in the class.

Now after obtaining the permission and gathering Puthri scholars came the other task. It had rained heavily, and the entire place near the playground and the entrance area of the class room was wet. The classroom allotted was stagnated in rain water and the desks inside this class room too was found immersed in water.

As a trainer, it is necessary to make sure that the classrooms where Puthri scholars were present has to be conducive, suitable and safe in order to help them in participating the session without any hesitation. To my surprise I found that children, who were disinterested initially took initiative in cleaning the entire classroom and made themselves comfortable. They also expressed their interest to start the session. I noticed that this was because of the personalized attention and concern that I had shown as a responsible mentor. I recognized that this was mandatory in order to gain their confidence and trust.
